AJA (Atlanta, GA)

Aja's modern Asian decor fits with the Atlanta-based restaurant group, "Here to Serve's" trendy vibe. The open space and chic bar set up welcome you as you enter and the warmth continues during the dining experience. The (youthful) staff is very attentive and friendly while the tea lit dining room set the mood. Of course I fell in love with the menu and it's gigantic selection of small plates. My empty stomach and giant eyes wanted them all but with 3 of us dining, we narrowed it down to to a few.

I am sooo happy to report that Galanga (Wilton Manors, FL) is back to its old self! This Thai/Japanese restaurant was always a favorite of mine, but a few months back, I noticed a change and we took Galanga out of our rotation. I was recently advised by my gal pal, and fellow sushi connoisseur, that improvements were made. I trusted Gina and wanted to believe that there was a revolution- and she was right. What created the turnaround? A new owner! And before I go on to tell you all about the dining experience, let me mention that Nita, a little Asian woman filled with a big personality, is everything a restaurateur should be. She plays a very active role IN her restaurant, from answering the phone to visiting with the guests to give that extra touch of customer service (she even did a sake bomb with us)!

Oh what a night, late October back in ‘89 (or some time very close to that). This was the first time I welcomed the thought of eating sushi. My parents continuously brought me to their favorite Japanese restaurant and I always opted for the chicken teriyaki, but for some reason on that one Fall night, my 8 year old brain decided it was time to “Go for the Roe” and try my first roll. I haven’t a clue what specific one it was, but knowing my folks ain’t the California roll type, my guess is there was some tuna, whitefish, eel or perhaps all three packed inside the spiraled rice and seaweed.   From that moment on, I was hooked.

This past Saturday, I went back to where it all started, Su-Shin (Lauderhill, FL). I reminisced as we passed the private table in front where my love for sushi developed. We took a seat in the back of the restaurant, which is a relatively small space in a strip mall location. From the outside, it could be deceiving, but I urge you to follow the old “don’t judge a book by its cover” bit. Inside, there is a modern look complete with a beautiful, elongated fish tank. The sushi chefs are friendly and you are welcomed to sit at the sushi bar to watch them in action. The staff is attentive starting with a warm towel brought to you for cleansing.
